Ask the PT: What can the ASTYM System do for me?  View Answer

I have had pain for over a year now. Can you I ask my doctor if I can try physical therapy? What do I need to begin?

You can always ask your doctor for a prescription for physical therapy. That will be necessary for your insurance to pay for your treatment.

I was told that I need surgery to my shoulder. I tried Physical Therapy an another facility. Would it be worth trying another facility.

Yes. If you are being told that surgery is your only alternative it would be well worth the time to try another facility. Physical Therapy centers can operate very differently and vary in their approach and treatment. For example, we use many hands on techniques along with treatments that fit our patients particular pain needs. We have also found that sometimes the diagnosis is incorrect. We recently had a patient who was diagnosed with a rotator cuff issue. After a thorough evaluation with our therapist, he found that the pain was actually from a cervical nerve impingement. We then notified their doctor with the findings and treated accordingly
It’s good to find a place that really cares about what you are going through. After suffering for months with a rotator cuff issue, I was afraid that I would never play sports at the same level again. After surgery, I still had a lot of pain but my rehab went better than I ever expected. I did a lot of exercises along with my therapy that really helped with my strength. After a few months I am back to life and feeling great.
